CHEZ GIOVANNI RIGHT TO REPLY
MARINABROOMS COMMENTS ARE STUPID BIASSED NONSENSE !
THE RESTAURANT IS NOT GRIM WE ARE BOTHERED ABOUT DECOR AND GIOVANNIS IS SOMETHING OUT OF THE ORDINARY... IN FACT IT IS UNIQUR AND LOVED BY THE MANY, MANY PEOPLE WHO REGULARLY SUPPORT US. PEOPLE COME BECAUSE AS WELL AS HAVING FABULOUS FOOD THEY LOVE THE AMBIENCE THAT HAS BEEN CAREFULLY CREATED FOR AUTHENTICITY..... BRUSCHETTA MADE WITH CIABATTA BREAD ?.... WHAT DOES SHE EXPECT IT TO BE MADE OF ?...HOVIS ? BARABRYTH ?..BRACES THICK SLICED, WHAT A BLOODY STUPID COMMENT.... THE FISH WASNT TO HER LIKING AND THE SAME APPLIES TO THE LASAGNE.. OH! ALSO THE SPAG BOL THAT WAS CONSUMED BY MANY OTHER CUSTOMERS THAT NIGHT AND OF COURSE THERE IS THE THOUSANDS OF DINERS WHO VOTED US BEST ITALIAN RESTAURANT FOR THE SEVENTH YEAR IN A ROW...THEY ARE ALL WRONG AND SHE IS RIGHT ? I DONT THINK SO.SHE HAS DESCRIBED THE RESTAURANT AS VILE...THAT COULD BE SLANDEROUS, BUT BECAUSE OF THE LACK OF CREDIBILITY OF ANY OF HER COMMENTS WE WONT BOTHER TO PERSUE THAT AT THIS POINT IN TIME. SHE RECOMMENDS GING TO PIZZA HUT AND WHILST I THINK THAT IS PROBABLY THE RIGHT PLACE FOR HER TO DINE, I RESPECTFULLY SUGGEST THAT SOME OF YOU MAY BE A LITTLE MORE SUITED TO A PREMISES SUCH AS OURS. WE AT CHEZ GIOVANNI WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THIS OPPORTUNS OLD AND NEW FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND ASSURE YOU OF OUR CONTINUED ATTENTION TO YOU. WE HAVE JUST BEEN AWARDED FOUR STARS BT THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIROMENTAL HEALTH, MORE THAN THE CHANDELRY ( 1 STAR ), JUNCTION 28 ( 2 STARS ), THE PRIORY ( 2 STARS ) AND CURROS ( 1 STAR ) TO QUOTE BUT A FEW. CHECK THEM OUT YOURSELF AT foodratings.gov.uk

Get ready for D&V
This restaurant is completely grim. Not bothered about the decor as nothing out of the ordinary, however, the waitresses were miserable and unhelpful, one of them couldn't even be bothered to go to the bottom of the table to pass the food, giving it to the person at the top who then had to pass it down. The food was diabolical, even basic garlic bread was mushy, bruschetta was actually ciabatta, then the mains fish was totally inedible mushy and like jelly, the lasagne was the standard you would get in a pub, so peppery it burnt your throat. The prices were extremely high considering the quality and quantity of food. The reviews given by friends or x staff of this restaurant cannot be relied on as they are biased towards it. I would not recommend this vile place to anyone, in fact save your money and go to Pizza Hut where you realise the food won't be great but at least its edible and reasonably priced.

Dirty grubby games, Fab place
  10 / 10
I have today been made aware of this site and the previous review, the author of which I can only assume is for some unknown reason trying to pass themselves off as me, the real Alison! So I am here to give the truth.
I do personally know Brian and Christine the owners of Chez Giovanni and there whole family, I did used to work for them in Giovanni's and consider myself a friend to them, their whole Family and the business.
Having worked in many forms of hospitality I would definatly consider Chez Giovanni to be the cleanest, un grubbiest establishment of these and have happily eaten there as a customer with my family. The decor of the restaurant is in keeping with the meditterainan cuisine it offers and spectacularity delivers, hence them continuously being nominated for and winning the coveted voice magazine restaurant of the year award.
The Chef Kris has as far as I am aware been there since at least 2002 which was when I worked there and definatly for quite some time before that, he is in a relationship with the owners daughter ( why this is of concern is beyond me but since the fake Alison is pointing this out in an accusational tone, I will justify..) this relationship started during my time there so in no way is his talent as a chef compromised by family favours as he was already an established experienced chef at Giovanni's before the relationship started. And the fact that he is now part of the family endears me more to the restaurant as it is genuinely now Family run.
You pay for what you get as far as I and most credible consumers would agree and Giovanni's offers a wide range of cuisine to suit every taste, unfortunately not at Macdonalds prices but this is the real world!
I would definatly recommend Giovanni's and would say to anyone if you go there and for some reason you are unsatisfied Brian and Christine would be more than happy to resolve your issues with you rather than leave crabby cowardly comments under fake names pretending to be someone else on websites trying to hinder the wonderful reputation that has been built up for over 30 years, 30 years speaks more volumes than any review!
Keep up the good work Brian, Christine, Kris and the gang and see you all soon. Alison x

I agree about the place, it is dated and grubby, I also know the people who own this restaurant and know for a fact that the chef has not been there that long, as it is their daughters husband. The food is not very italian and was disappointing, we paid just under £100 for 3 people which included wine. I have been to a more classy place for same price and food was exceptional. The food was more like a fast food place. I will not go back, shame there are very little descent restaurants in Newport. They are a lovely couple away from work, but a bit grumpy at work. Shame, I think with a bit of advice it could be great place.
