Pub looks great and could be the best..!
  5 / 10
My last review of the Blake Arms reflected the positive changes that were taking place. These changes weren't just cosmetic but in my opinion social. As I said the Blake was on it's way back to it's former glory and I was so pleased for our small community. Since then the new owners have invested in the pub and given it a little face lift. They now serve food which is quite good for the price and have live bands on Saturday nights.
Having said all that I have to point out a few failings in what they have done. I have to mention that I waited over an hour for a burger...on the odd occasion I could see the chef looking very very stressed as he was cooking about 20 meals by himself. The staff who in my opinion tried very hard to keep things going just looked stressed and disgruntled. My overall feeling after my meal was....what's the point of offering food to customers without trained staff and the proper infrastructure needed to support the chef.
My next gripe was that the Blake is now a family pub right ...? I would ask people reading this to have a look at the Three Horse Shoes. It has a fantastic playground for the kids with swings, slides and climbing frames which keeps them occupied for hours. The Blake has now got 2 swings and sometimes a small bouncy castle. This was enough to keep my kids occupied for half an hour so we left and went to the Horse Shoes instead.
Oh one last thing....the Blake is way to small to host a full band. The acoustics are terrible and the music just sounds awful. The worst of it is, by the time the band sets up there's hardly anywhere left to sit.
Good food.....Loyal staff......that's a good foundation to build on.
Lets try....better playground....better service...either more seats or smaller bands..!
The Blake could clean up around here and eventually take customers away from the Three Horse Shoes which is packed day and night..!
Good luck for the future :-)

The Blake s Back..!!!
  5 / 10
I felt compelled to update my review which was written back in November 2011.
I have visited the pub many times over the past year and have seen improvement after improvement. The couple who presently own the pub are not only investing in the pub but in the community they serve.

Through the week your guaranteed a great pint in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. There is now excellent entertainment on weekends and great food. The undesirable element that had crept back into the Blake back in November 2011 is now gone and the pub is back on track to being the best in the area. I can't praise the present owners enough for bringing our local pub back from the brink of despair.

The Blake Arms is clean, friendly and an asset to Seghill. I hope that if you live in the area you will come and see for yourself. This is how a local pub should be ran and I am now once again proud to tell people about our local pub...!

in response . . .
  10 / 10
I find the comments made by ontheball to be totally and utterly incorrect. Katy and Martin took over just before Xmas 2011 and since then have made huge steps into making the Blake an exceptionally good local pub with a fantasticly enjoyable atmosphere. Excellent Curry night on Tuesdays and superb fresh Sunday carvery. They have recently decorated inside and transformed the beer garden. I think ontheball may have been one of the unlucky riffraff that are no longer tolerated and has an ax to grind. I find myself wholeheartedly agreeing with bill . . . DO NOT AVOID AT ANY COST . . . GIVE IT A GO YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED

On The Ball
If you are local to Seghill I hope you have already paid The Blake a visit since OnTheBall's
comment. I note that this person has set his/hers profile as private otherwise I would have left him/her/it a comment.

I have lived in the estate behind the pub since April 2010. As I work many Friday and Saturday nights I wasn't in much until about September 2011. In all the times I was in during that time I had no issues apaer from the seats could do with recovering.

Since Martin and Kate took over I would challenge anyone to state the pub was anything but a brilliant village pub. You can't make a silk purse out of a sows ear so local people need to get their lazy fat arses down there if just for a couple of pints. Or Chips with gravy/curry or whatever.

Seghill has a community, and a local pub is vital to it. We police ourselves most of the time so for gods sake tel your good neighbours and friends that if we don't use it we will lose it, and that includes the fabulous live music Martin and Katy are committed to supporting.

Great Local Pub
The Blake is under the new management of Martin and Kate, with their main barmaid Karen. The pub is inviting and the locals are friendly, their kitchen is open for chips and snacks most of the time. Their curry evenings ae spectacular and you MUST watch for their LIVE music on the last Saturdays of the month specifically. They ONLY have the top North East pub bands on and it's always a great night.
