What a great shame!
The Plough is in beautiful surroundings by the river. I was with a party of 13 for Sunday lunch 17 January 2010. The staff were not welcoming at all. The bar area looked very pleasant and clean with luxurious sofas and plenty of tables and seating but the restaurant area was dark and there was little 'atmosphere'. The serving staff were polite but mostly uncommunicative and scruffy. The food was disappointing, we were not asked how we would like our meat cooked. The meat arrived as three very thin, overcooked slices which were cold. The roast potatoes were probably bought in frozen and the Yorkshire puds were soggy, from being heated in a microwave I think. The veg were swimming in water and I think probably reheated in the microwave. The gravy was good. We weren't offered any sauces at all and had to ask for horseradish sauce which came in a very small pot, just sufficient for one person, which I found particularly mean. We weren't asked if everything was OK until the plates were being cleared. We were offered a dessert menu but one of the party said not to bother because she would prefer not to stay and invited everyone back to her house for desserts instead. This place had been recommended to one of the party but I certainly wouldn't recommend their Sunday lunch menu. Two of the party didn't have the roast; instead one opted for rissoto which was a small portion but tasty whilst the other had ham and eggs - frozen poor chips but the ham and eggs were fine.

We left a small tip for the young, inexperienced waiter. Nobody acknowledged our departure - they were far too busy being disinterested! A few smiles and a bit of attentiveness could have made our visit so much more pleasant instead of disappointing. What a shame!
