Excellent Food - Excellent value
  9 / 10
Having read the diatribe by applebob ( whoever he thinks he is ) I really have to take issue with his comments. Definitely more Monotone than Gastronome and certainly likes to think he is a connoiseur. The Service is always fast and pleasant and you are never kept waiting long before your meal is served at the Royal Oak. There are plenty of Local eating establishments close to where we live in Gressingham but the Royal Oak gets our vote every time. In fact we are on our way now for Sunday Tea. So applebob the fact you say you won't be returning I'm sure won't worry the Owners one little bit in fact I wouldn't blame them if they didn't want to serve you. Stick to your Chipperies on the Isle of Sodor or wherever you go with your little Campervan you're not welcome in our local !

The Royal Oak at Hornby
  8 / 10
We have been to The Royal Oak at Hornby now on several occasions over the summer of 2009.
We have had good food, with good service, the only thing that I asked for was a cheese board, & the waitress did not know what I meant? This is the only reason I have given 8 out of 10.
On the other hand, the sticky toffee pudding is to die for.
All in all The Royal Oak is a very nice old country pup, with friendly staff, & friendly locals that make to a good warm friendly atmosphere.
I can recommend The Royal Oak at Hornby.

Fresh Fish and Chips
  9 / 10
I went along with my wife on Wednesday 8th July 2009 and had the wednesday fish and chip special. Having eaten my way along the Lune Valley's pub / restaurant trail i can safely assure you that this was the best quality fresh fish and chips i have tasted. Relating to a previous post on this site i can only say that the gentleman in question obviously hadn't read the menu correctly which states clearly that Fresh Fish and Chips are served only on Wednesday evenings and in light of this i suggest he and his wife should pay a return visit as the other establishments quoted in his post do not match the food served at the Oak either in quality or value. My wife and i go to the Thursday pensioners luncheon. This i can only describe as marvellous value..Two courses for four pounds ninty five, but if you decide to go its best to book as it gets ever so busy.Everyone is entitled to an opinion but i think the success of the licencees for getting bums on seats speaks volumes in the presant climate.A good pub.doing good pub food and with a reputation to match!!

'everyfin alrite wiv your meal then?'
  3 / 10
Plus side:- 'Original Beer' on arrival excellent and extraordinarily 'well-kept'. My wife's 'Lamb Henry' - she thoroughly enjoyed! Negative side:- The large glass of medium white wine for my wife was most certainly a 'Whiter Shade of Pale' and most certainly not the best. My 'Breaded Haddock', despite previous recommendation about which I will take issue with he who recommended your 'Fish' and, to be kind to the Chef or those who 'bought in' this frozen 'ding-ding'excuse for 'Fish' was absolutely disgusting as were the horrendous frozen excuses for chipped potatoes which accompanied this piece of corrugatged cardboard. Judging by the amount of 'Reserved' Tables on entry at 5.30pm this evening, I can only assume that either (a) non of your 'Return Visitors' either enjoy or consume your 'Breaded Haddock' or (b) if they do, then they haven't a clue as to what 'Fish' should taste like. Quite frankly, what I had to endure this evening was a 'Piscean' example of that which should be referred to the 'Trading Standards'. Should either the licensee or the Chef require to know a little more about simple 'Fish un Chips', I invite you to read my own recommendations on the 'Sugar Vine' Website or simply visit the 'Ship' at Caton, the 'Ship' at Elswick or indeed, the 'Steam Packet' on the Isle of Whithorn amongst many others who may indeed charge a couple of pounds more but at least you can enjoy honest good 'fine fare' of what should indeed be our 'National Dish'. Will most certainly not be coming again and unless I hear to the contrary, will not be able to recommend your establishment to anyone. Yours most sincerely A long past stalwart of the Royal Oak at Hornby.
