Re. Mothers day Flop
Dear Karen,

Regarding your recent correspondence about your visit on mothers day 22nd March 2009. I have noted all of your concerns which unfortunately were not raised during your visit, with management.
In response to you bullet points:
1. I can only apologise if you thought that the service was poor.
2. Also if you thought the staff were miserable and the atmosphere was unpleasant.
I can assure you that all the other customers were very happy with the service and the attention they received from the staff.
3. The Lamb Medallions were featured on the special board at £12.95 served with mint gravy, mashed potato, and vegetables. All four meals were served with roast potatoes as you requested. They were not cut in half, a full portion of carrots and broccoli were presented with the meal with two thick portions of lamb.
All the other lamb specials sold that day were complimented on for their presentation and taste. In fact all the lamb sold out that day with no other complaints.
4. It would not have been possible to roast more potatoes having already prepared the meal but an alternative of sautéed potatoes was offered. (as a former chef I expect you would understand this)
5. The lamb is prepared for us at Bowgreave House Farm in Garstang and I am assured that production would not in any way allow a pigs kidney to be in contact with the lamb. Pigs kidney is not something that is prepared in this establishment
6. The rum and raisin ice-cream is produced by Granelli and supplied by Total Food Service Clitheroe
Again all of the customers enjoyed the ice-cream which also was fully sold out that day.
7. It is unfortunate that you did not enjoy your visit and the food. However the total cost of the meal is a fair and competitive price for the quality produce used. The potatoes were Maris Piper and prepared in house, the vegetables sourced locally at Causeway Farm steamed to order and the Lamb is of the very best quality
8.When you rang later that day to discuss things as you will appreciate it was very busy and had you informed the staff member of who you were and what had happened then if you would have left a contact number, the issues you have raised could have been discussed later that day. I am informed how ever that you chose not too do this but contact trading standards directly.

I am sorry that you did not enjoy your visit, however it seems it is only yourselves who were not happy, and that all other customers were extremely satisfied and particularly complimentary about the food and the standard of service. It is disappointing that you have decided not to visit us again.

I have to say that the food was prepared to a very high standard using quality produce, locally sourced and that as far as I am concerned all members of staff were courteous, helpful, and pleasant. In addition all of your party cleared your plates and desert of all the food. The plates used were main course serving bowls not soup bowls. Also the fact that you hadn?t had time to get a cake for you mother our staff supplied complimentary fudge cake so that you could surprise her.

I have contacted the suppliers concerned who are surprised at your comments regarding their produce, and would be pleased to discuss any issues with you as would ourselves.

It is a pity that at the time of paying for your meal you did not bring your concerns to a senior member of staff, so that the matter could have been dealt with at the time. Whilst you were not satisfied with your visit I can only assure you that every effort was made to make the day special for not only your selves but all the customers. I have to say that no other complaints regarding the food or the service were brought up and indeed all the customers were extremely complementary.

Yours sincerely

Dawn Merrill

The Lion's Mother's Day Flop
  1 / 10
Mother's Day, 22nd March 2009, I made the awful mistake of suggesting to my elderly parents that we meet at "The Lion" for a Mother's Day meal, it is rare that I am able to get time off work, since I work hard, 7 days pw. My parents used to eat at The Lion with some friends of theirs, so they were happy to agree to what was supposed to be a Mother's Day treat....sadly this was far from the case... First off they were not serving my parents preferred meal of Lamb Cutlets, instead it was Lamb Medalions with vegetables. Both my Mum & D ad and my daughter and I all decided to try that. The service meanwhile was poor, the fair haired young female waitress was miserable faced and everything seemed too much trouble for her. Then the said waitress brought cutlery, a steak knife and a fork for the main course of Lamb medalions, which immediately made us feel that the meat must be tough, otherwise why the steak knife? Then the meal came, served in a soup dish, perhaps so that it would look more than if they had put the same amount on a plate, one roast potato cut in half, a spoonful of carrots and brocolli and 2 bits of tough poorly cooked lamb, not medalions and my father's had a pigs kidney attached, how strange is that? I asked for mint sauce, the miserable waitress brought a tiny plastic pot saying that there was already mint in the gravy. The gravy was barely visible on the plate. My mother asked the miserable waitress if she could have more roast potatoes, the said waitress replied "I don't think so but I will ask", some time later she returned to our table and said "No the chef needs them for the roasts"! That was the last straw. Mother's day flopped. I had a hard job persuading my parents to have a sweet, but eventually we all ordered Rum and Raisen Ice Cream, it was tasteless and the service throughout was to say the least poor, with everything begrudged and too much trouble. The cost of this digraceful meal was £96. When asked at the till if "everything was alright" I replied "No, it was awful and its wrecked my mother's Day", to which the guy on the till replied "oh I'm sorry to hear that", after which he did nothing to appease me, no concession, no offer of a partial refund, no offer to fetch the manager for me to discuss my distdain with, so I left and for the first time in my life and at upon the suggestion of my parents; without leaving a tip. After my parents had gone home, I tried to phone The Lion asking to speak with the manager, but the guy on the till said that he was too busy to come to the phone, so I rang off saying "Ok if he is too busy "I will contact trading standards about this and speak to them instead". I am bitterly disappointed, niether my daughter, myself or my parents will ever go again and for £96 I feel I have been mugged and abused, I cannot therefore write a favourable review about this pub and I certainly cannot recommend it to others. The Lion was once a nice place to eat, but it has certainly gone down the nick since we went last time and the atmosphere was awful, the staff are miserable and the manager is a modern day scrooge. I am telling it the way it is here, I hope no one else has the same unfortunate experience. "Not recommended, avoid it like the plague, its a serious rip off and far from value for money" is my review.
