Delicious food, excellent service, great pub ambiance
  10 / 10
On our way to Heathrow to return to US, we stopped at The Grouse and Ale on the recommendation of a friend. It was absolutely worth the detour! This was our last chance to have fish and chips and steak pie, though it was difficult to pass up the other more sophisticated offerings on the menu. The fish was excellent - thick and white and the beer batter crispy and thin . The chips were perfect - hot, crispy and delicious. The steak pie was simply stuffed with meat and the veggies fresh and just right. There was a large group of Rotarians going in for lunch when we arrived so we expected to wait, but I was dazzled by the helpful, friendly service. Our starter and drinks arrived promptly and our main courses came just when we were ready. And watching one of the staff, Ian I think, carry more dishes than humanly possible is great fun. The Grouse and Ale is the best pub we visited in our four week vacation.

GREAT FOOD & GREAT SERVICE
  10 / 10
Three of us came for the Australia Day dinner and weren't disappointed! My squid starter was gorgeous and apparently the carpaccio of tuna was fantastic! Two of us had the rissoto stuffed cabbage leaves and we were both delighted. Our other friend had the Queensland Chicken and said it was delicious - we couldn't try it as she wouldn't part with any of it! The service was outstanding - great attention to detail and we were never made to feel intruded upon but always attended to! No wonder they won Best Gastro Pub of the South East 2010!

Appalling meal at Grouse & Ale
  2 / 10
A party of six of us ate at the Grouse & Ale last night and while nobody was impressed with either their starter or main mine was exceptionally poor, after choosing the hazelnut crusted salmon fillet for my main I was presented with a warm, perfectly cylindrical piece of fish, straight out of a can complete with those little bits of White cartilage found in your can of John West, for £16 if I recall correctly. Absolute disgrace and poss the worst establishment I can remember eating in. For the record when I asked for the meal to be taken back to the kitchen and replaced with a different meal the waiter rutted at me and shook his head

Christmas Lunch was Disapponting
  2 / 10
40 of us had the Christmas Lunch here. How disappointing, the pate starter and the turkey and rolled pork was of inferior quality. The best part about the meal was the coffee. It would have been better to go to the Harvester at least you know what to expect there and their quality is better. Do not go for the set Christmas lunch!!
