favourite pub
  9 / 10
I often go to this pub and my family love it my farther often sits at the bar chatting with his mates and not only are the staff nice the food is good, although it can often be the same things on the menus it is a good place to go and be with nice people and have a chat.
i would suggest people to go there and this is my honest opinion as there are other pubs near that i could go. it is a nice place and good to get a drink if you have been for a walk in the lovely area.

Disappointed, looked nice, but....
  3 / 10
Been past the Victoria Inn a couple of times and thinking it looked like a good pub with character decided to take the wife out for a meal Friday night (17 Sept 2010).

Got there about 19:40, no need to book for the restaurant, even on a Friday as the place was DEAD.... as in about 5 people of which two were bar staff and the rest customers.

Chilly night out and even colder in the pub, to be fair there was a well stocked log fire to warm yourself at, shame it wasnâ??t lit though.

Barman was friendly enough, and the ale was cold as well, so I'll award a star for that. We will ignore the fact he took ten min's to find a corkscrew as judging by the number of people in the place I doubt it gets used much!

The food was totally out of character for what we walked into and can only be described as very good. I had the fillet steak, so fresh I thought I'd have to chase it round the plate, proper melt in your mouth job, excellent. Wifeâ??s first choice was, sadly not available though, sold out apparently(?) but the fish that she eventually had was also of a high quality. So two stars awarded. I would have awarded more but the menu was shall we say limited, very... and the 'blackboards' with the specials on were, to be kind very empty... Pity.

As for the character and atmosphere that you would normally find in a country pub, that sadly was also missing. Very little in the way of décor on the walls although there was a token picture or two and a dartboard which did no favours to setting any favourable sort of country pub atmosphere.

We finally moved on about 21:30ish having had our meal, in the 2 hours we were there 2 customers left and 3 more came in to give us the highlight of the visit... a game called 'hunt the corkscrew' as played by the barman! stunning lol.

Where was the Landlord? absent it seems, at a guess probably either gone out to another pub for a decent night out or hiding out back in embarrassment. If it was my pub and it was that quiet on a Friday night I would panic, lots....

Would we go back? good question...

For the food? Yes, although I would like to see a more adventurous menu and if your going to put up a blackboard with the days specials on it, at least have something to put on and preferably fill it otherwise it just looks as if someone has moved the blackboard used for scoring the darts.

For the atmosphere? No, I would rather drive 150 miles to a pub I know sat out in the middle of Dartmoor with atmosphere rather than the 5 miles from Brize to a place with less atmosphere than the local churchyard! We will however give it one more go, this time on a Sat, just to see if there's any improvement.

Disappointed of Brize,

Frank.
