Appalling service and even worse food - 1 star is far to good for this place
  1 / 10
Never judge a book by its cover - this is such a pretty looking place but thats where all the good ends.
Upon arrival we advised that we had booked a table the previous night, we could see that no tables had been reserved and we were told 'you can sit there' and we were pointed to a table, not even bothering to take us to the table. As soon as we sat down we were asked if we would like to order our food. We declined as obviously needed to choose what we wanted to eat. In the meantime we did order drinks. The Rose wine that one of us had ordered was clearly watered down, you could tell by sight and taste but we let that one pass. We ordered medium rare steak with stilton sauce, which arrived very rare, without the stilton sauce and without a steak knife, we had to ask for one. We asked for it be to cooked through a bit more, and they took it back to the kitchen, chicken and leek pie which looked like a pile of vomit (sorry but that is what it looked like) with a pre-made frozen ready to cook pastry top. The chicken was not breast meat it was leg and wing meat and very tough. It was inedible. 10 minutes later we were still waiting for the steak to come back. Spicy prawns and chips, gammon egg and chips which both meals were edible but only just. A child meal of ham and chips, but again they didn't ask whether it should come with peas or beans etc, so they just plonked on peas. After still waiting for the steak to be returned, we decided to leave it and leave the establishment (can't call it a restaurant really) I requested the bill and advised that we would not be paying for the steak or the chicken pie. Bill arrived with steak crossed off but they were still expecting us to pay for the chicken pie. The landlord said we got we ordered, but we didn't as we asked for medium rare steak with stilton sauce but didnt get what we ordered.I refused at which point he asked us all to leave. I could hear him moanong and complaining to other customers about us. He has got to be the most rude landlord I have ever had the misfortune to come across. If Devon Cliffs holiday park ever closes so will his business as he is purely relying on passing trade and not regulars. Please consider going somewhere else. By all accounts the pub over the road is supposed to be good but we never went there so cannot comment.

First visited this restaurant while on holiday in 2009. Was so impressed returned 4 times in a week. Have just returned from a weeks holiday in Exmouth (Haven) and was pestered from the minute we arrived by my kids to go to The Cottage Restaurant. We were not disappointed. The food was excellent and very reasonably priced, clean plates all round, the staff were all very helpful and polite and a great time was had by all. I would strongly recommend a visit.

Absolutly fab,we wasn't allowed to dine anywhere else as my kids loved the meals and came up with empty plates everytime which is a first. Not expensive at all , adults meals average 7 to 8 pounds, kids 4 pounds many of them homemade, the owner even gave me tips on the recipe. we booked everytime as the cottage gets very busy in the evenings. Great staff and value for money.
