Turks Head Inn - An off day?
BAR FOOD REVIEW ONLY, NOT THE HOTEL SECTION. Had heard that The Turks Head BAR FOOD had a good reputation. How?? Did we go on an 'off' day?' We arrived early, at 6pm. The Car park was nearly full even then. On arrival, I was met at the bar by two people ensuring they finished their conversation first before looking up and talking to me. With 'have you booked?' out of the way (we had not admittedly) we were given the only option of the dark corner of the bar (left as you enter) The decor was old, tired and dirty feeling. There was food from a previous meal smeared on the radiator next to our table and the room was cold (despite being warm outside) We ordered a starter, Fish and Chips & Chicken with new potatoes plus a 'salad' on each. 1: STARTER: Garlic Bread: Toasted French stick , however, apart from the edges of the bread, which were burnt, the body of the stick was rubbery and stretched as you attempted to bite and pull the rest away from your mouth. 2: THE FISH: Small, thick batter deep fried to within an inch of its life, it was very dark in colour because it was over cooked/fried. It looked very much as though it was from a pack from a supermarket given its small, thin and neat shape. There was a tiny 'slither' of dry white fish inside underneath all that thick manufactured batter. 3: CHICKEN: It had that old, post frozen taste and I strongly suspect was boiled first before meeting the fate of the deep fat fryer, it was genuinely rotten! 3: CHIPS: What can you say about pre-made shipped in frozen 'oven chips' apart from 'tasteless'. 4: 'New' potatoes. Looked and tasted re-heated. Most had black 'eyes' and black rot within. 5: SALAD: This consisted of a tiny portion of shredded wet ice-burg lettuce, one quarter of a tomato and two slices of cucumber. Wonderful.
I know this reads as a moaning rant, but this is the first time I have ever felt compelled to review a place. £20 (ok it's not the dearest of meals) for 2 meals that can only be describe as fit enough only for a motorway service station. . .from the 1970's. Truly Disappointed. If they had been priced according to the quality of, and I say this loosely, ''Food'', £2.99 per meal would be pushing it. Why is it that in so many places in the UK, if you have relatively cheap priced food it nearly always HAS to be of a poor standard? The 'Turks Head' certainly fits this billing.
