disappointed
Well the Peacock has been a favourite of ours for at least 3 years until today, although since being taken over last year we dont find it as good as it was. Anyway we thought we were good customers going at least twice a week and thought maybe you should treat your regulars well, give them what they want, the customer is always right or so we thought!! Tonight we went and decided we would have the meat and potatoe pie, we've had it before but the portion of pie is enourmous and too much for one person, so we asked if it could be cut in half between us making it a smaller piece each, fair enough the barmaid who took our order said, next thing they brought the plates out one was empty and one had the big piece of pie an chips etc, i said your having a laugh!! no they said, we had to split the meal between us, onto the seperate plate!! how humiliating was that in a packed pub!! then they had the cheek to ask if meal was ok!! well no it wasnt, what were people thinking of us sharing our dinner, they must be hard up they cant afford two meals!! all they said was, they were'nt allowed to cut it in half!! so much for what the customer wants he gets, well im sorry but its our last visit. Pie wasnt up to much anyway i found piece of what i think was paper in the middle and the meat was dark as if it had been overheated or over cooked!!very disappointed

Lovely afternoon
  9 / 10
I found the food to be most agreeable. Traditional pub grub is what you want and this is exactly what you get. My companion and I found the food to be tasty and satisfying. Washed down with a couple of good quality ales served by friendly bar staff made for a thoroughly pleasant afternoon. Unsure why opinion on this place is so polarized. Perhaps there are 2 Peacock pubs in Oakerthorpe albeit in parallel universes.

Excellent Family pub!
  10 / 10
A gorgeous old pub, unpretentious with a friendly family atmosphere, good humoured staff, helpful waitresses and a lovely big garden for the kids to run around in. There was also play equipment in a child-proof enclosure meaning we could relax in the knowledge that they were safe and contained!

The fish and chips were pretty much the best I've tasted, second only to the Magpie cafe in Whitby; light bubbly beer batter and very fresh fish in huge portions and for a fiver we definitely got our money's worth.

A point of fascination for the children was the transparent floor tile allowing a view into the spooky cellar and if you peered from a certain angle you could see a human skull!!

such a shame
  1 / 10
We had seen various signs for Sunday lunch and so on Easter Sunday decided to try the Peacock again. We had been before it changed hands and it had been excellent value for money with large plates heaped full of food. Oh Dear - What a mistake. We should have known better because there were few cars in the car park and now we know why. The meat had been machine cut from a cold piece and warmed a little (and was tough to say the least). This was obvious from looking how neat the slices were. The so called roast potatoes had been deep fried. The mashed potato was grey and lumpy and looked a little suspicious so we both left it. The yorkshire pudding looked as though the cook (there isnt a chef) had sat on them. We ate the few carrots and peas there were (and I mean a few)and the cabbage they hadnt bothered cooking at all. We had to ask for gray since the meal was unedible without and we ended up leaving close on half the meal on the plate. The waitress didnt ask why we had left food on our plates although she at least was pleasant. Generally the meal was only luke warm and I think this is probably the last time we will be going to the Peacock

Cheese and onion pie
  1 / 10
Visited for lunch today (25th March 2011) and ordered cheese and onion pie with hand cut chips and seasonal vegetables which sounded really tempting. What arrived was truly awful - the 'pie' was actually a gratin dish full of white sauce with some onions and a little cheese added with a puff pastry top. I expected a cheese and onion pie to be filled with more cheese than any other ingredient! The pastry was only just cooked and the filling was luke warm. The seasonal vegetables were 1 spoonful of overcooked frozen peas. The chips were nice but at £4.95 very expensive! I went to order a sweet as I was still starving and complained and was told I should have sent the food back. Couldn't do that as we were not approached by a waitress and I'd left my half full plate of food at the table. Needless to say it had been cleared away when I got back. I wasn't offered an apology or even a free sweet so needless to say will not be returning or recommending the Peacock to anyone! One of the worst meals I have ever been served.
