An old favourite
  10 / 10
This is such a warm and welcoming little pub in everyway, Roy and Wendy are such a unique couple who really understand what pubs are all about. This is not a food pub but one that excels in fine ales and community spirit - which is varied and in abundance.

It is the sort of place you can go in a group or on your own, where customers come from far and wide and talk to each other even if they don't know them from Adam, so a sense of being part of the spirit of the pub happens really naturally.

There is an excellent jukebox which offers something for everyone, you can play darts and have game of pool table too. As several people have mentioned already there is a lovely beer garden with a stunning backdrop.

All in all there is always plenty going on and honsetly what more could you ask for in a traditional pub?

would that more pubs were like this!

I discovered this pub a few months ago on the unplugged music night (Wednesdays). I walked in as a total stranger, and left at the end of the night with a room full of (genuine) new friends. This is one of the nicest pubs I've been in for a long time, thanks to Wendi & Rob, 'Wagon Wheel' Stan and all the other fine musicians and everyone else who make it a great place to be.
The once-a-month 'plugged in' night is well worth a visit, with a wide range of music and some great players (good beer an' all!).
If you want a good night out in great company, then get down the Shoulder (you know you want to!).

It shines on and on

Well what can I say about this beautiful, unique pub? This isn't your usual boring old pub and the proprietors Wendi & Roy Morris aren't your usual landlords either. I know of no other place in Derbyshire that offers what Wend & Roy do. First of all the uniqueness of the pub. The fire lit in the back, a stunning collection of china cups attached to the cottage like wooden beams and really cosy, comfortable lounge like seating. Right! That's just the start...........

The Shoulder is a pillar of the community and has made sure there is never a dull moment for they're guests. I've not been to a pub recently that can say they're locals range from groups of young adults to people who have been faithful to they're local village pub for DECADES. Why is this? Let me go on...

First of all there is Roy & Wend, two of the most genuine, caring people who really give back. Once you befriend them, you'll be a friend for life.

A pool room and jukebox that's great for nights where Wend & Roy have no event planned (and that;s not often). A stunning beer garden for when the weather is good with the most amazing views you'll ever get from a pub. Now let me elaborate on the events. Wend & Roy have pulled the community together on all the occasions I've visited the Shoulder. Quiz and chips nights, darts matches, local fuddle with the most DEVINE local cheeses to compliment the best selection of local Ale (are you getting the LOCAL gist lol) an array of books and games so you'll always have something to do if you want a quiet pint.

Ok, let's get to the best parts. Wend & Roy are real people who care. They care enough that they are constantly teaming up with the villagers and raising money for charity. From Breast Cancer Awareness to units for Children's wards in hospitals, like i said, not your usual landlords!

Easy Mike night is another highlight to this pub. Set up so young and old from around the area can come and showcase they're talents in front of a supporting crowd. It's such a special thing to do ESPECIALLY for the younger ones. It gives them a place to belong, sing, forget for a time and I've got to tell you the atmosphere is ELECTRIC!

But don't just go on my review, go and visit this award winning pub. Check out what's happening on they're facebook page (link below) and take a look in the CAMRA guide 2012 and also I believe they're featured in the new 2013 edition too.

Just for the record......I live in London! I think that says enough :)
