Revamped, new owners, high grade music-focussed
  8 / 10
I would recommend ignoring reviews before 2012. The Fishpond went VERY downhill under the previous owners, but last year was bought out by a local businessman.

Since then a complete and very expensive upgrade and refurbishment has taken place,, fully reopenening in June 2012. They have returned it to it's old focus of music, both in the bar and for larger gigs upstairs in the impressive old ballroom. They have already hosted some excellent 'top quality' local bands - e.g. Loscoe State Opera, Northern Monkey, The Dooberries.

They keep a reasonable pint of popular local beers, e.g. Jaipur.

The food is excellent (I tried a salad and a ham baguette and both were well above average).

Not all of the staff are friendly and helpful - some seems a little disinterested - but they have some good staff too.

Well worth a visit!

Meal for five? NO THANKS!
  1 / 10
Decided to visit Matlock today as my daughter turned 21 and weather good. Decided to visit a place, where as a biker I have had many cold glasses of beer, to have lunch for the five of us... Oh Dear. I have never eaten dog food before and on reflection guess I will never do so again. My wife and I ordered steak pie, my oldest son Gammon and my daughter and her partner rump steak. The steaks turned out just fine (What can you get wrong) My son's Gammon was bloody in the centre, but the best was left in store for my wife and I... The meat in our slices was lets say very cold and slime like. The pastry uncooked. We complained and returned the three dishes.UGH.
