I have visited the Essex Rose Tea Room on several occasions, and have always had good service and good food. This time, though, I was very disappointed for several reasons.
1. The tablecloth was dirty, and had tea stains on from a previous customer.
2. I ordered a sandwich, along with afternoon tea and scones. The tea and scones were served before the sandwiches.
3. My partner asked for a coca-cola, which was served warm, with no ice. When I asked if they had any ice, I was told 'No', Not 'No, I'm sorry, or 'I could get you some' but a flat No, without an apology. My partner asked a differnt waitress which chilled drinks they had, and was told there was chilled water, and that she could being some. We explained the coke was warm, and the waitress said she was happy to bring ice, as she said others would probably want it too.

3 The sandwiches were served with no napkins or cutlery, so I think we were expected to eat coleslaw with our bare hands. I asked for cutlery which was brought straightwaway, but I don't think I should have had to ask.

4 Worst of all, the scones were stale, and tasted heavy, as though they had been baked, frozen and thawed. They were heavy and stodgy.

I was really looking forward to returning here, but will not go again. I had a cup of tea and slice of cake later at the National Trust teatoom in Flatford, which was much nicer, the staff far friendlier and the tearoom much cleaner and more welcoming. My advice, head to Flatford.

Poor Lunch
I have visited the Essex Rose on a number of occasions over the years for tea coffee and snacks. I have enjoyed the experience.

Yesterday I had lunch. This experience was awful. Beef Cobbler was a brown paste in a bowl. Some parts were very hot and some quite cold so I suspect a brief visit to a microwave prior to the adding of a biscuit like top. Tinned baby carrots hot but not cooked (rather like chewing a twig) and some soft (tinned?) peas.
