Don't right this place off!
  5 / 10
The "Pen" gets slated a lot which is a shame. Its reputation goes back issues it has decades ago. The landlord is trying hard to improve the look and feel of the place but as usual theses tings take time a money.
The bar has a pool table (which is used for local pool competitions)and a fruit machine and is where the bands play.
The lounge is where most of the over 30's and the odd family go. The pub has a bit of a rep for "skally's" but the majority of the locals who drink in there at night are respectable/professional people and are lovely. I was a regular for 10 years but I've moved from Pensby now but every time I go back, everyone seems genuinely pleased to see you. It does take a wee while to become accepted as a local but if you make the effort to be chatty and friendly they'll reciprocate.
The function room upstairs is large, bright and clean and I've used it a few times for parties and wakes - the buffets are always nice.
The pub food is simple but lovely and best of all is cheap and you get loads of it...I always have to squeeze the pudding in! The kitchen is tiny but every time I've been in, it has been immaculate (I've used to work in Catering and i'd be happy to work there without being worried about a any spot=visits from the HSE)
The staff are nice enough but don't expect any conversation from them.
The beer is fine but they don't sell real ale which is a shame.
Overall its a local which has loads of potential - Don't right it off!

Steer well clear of this place.

f I had to describe this pub in one word - Toilet When you look at its dilapidated features from outside and compare it to it's sister pubs when built which where the Railway in Meols and the Arrow Park Hotel in Woodchurch and the vibrant places they are it makes you look at it as the complete dump it is. You instantly get the feel for the place from the class of clientele usually loitering outside the door having a fag with their knuckles scraping along the floor and the various tattoos and replica football shirts on display ? and that?s just the women. Inside you have the choice of sitting in the snug that has about as much room as an aircraft toilet and feels as though it is one, with people propping up the bar with spit hanging out of their mouths reading the racing post or the bar area opposite that hasn't got one chair that isn't broken or falling to bits, a pool table that is bent in the middle so getting a straight shot is a bit tricky, especially with the cues that are as straight as the table. The bar staff have all the charm of a rotweiller chewing your leg and make you feel as welcome as such. Apparently they do cooked food, but unless you really relish a trip to the hospital a few hours later I?d give it a miss, as the kitchen is the size of a postage stamp and judging by the general grubbiness of the bar where if you lean on it you may well be stuck there forever as a result of the superglue like stickiness of it, it doesn't bode well for the standard of hygiene. There is also apparently a fair to be held on the car park this coming bank holiday which should be something like a cross between funland in Father Ted and the fair in Phoenix Nights, they are even advertising a beach, which presumably is going to be some sand from a builders site spread liberally about. Nothing quite screams seaside at you like sat on some builders sand in a pub car park overlooking an A class road watching articulated lorries and buses go past rather than the more traditional sea and boats. Steer well clear of this place like you would the plague.
