Best place to eat in Newmarket area by a mile
  10 / 10
The bad reviews are laughable - this is by far the best place to eat in the area - extensive menu, beautiful food, great service and ambiance, and great owners - anyone who doesn't find Tony the owner funny and friendly cannot have a sense of humour. Try it - you won't be disappointed. Al a carte restaurant, bar meals and Sunday lunch - all fabulous.

polite no way
on entering the Plough I ask if we could dine this evening and was greeted with a grumpy reply by the gentleman behind the bar, who I presumed to be the Landlord," Well we are a restaurant thats what we are here for" WE were shown a very extensive menu and boards, rather too much choice to my liking and very 1960`s. My friend and I decided on having starters only. We placed our order and we seemed to be frowned upon because we we were not having anything else. The food arrived. well for us it was not that good and the service was very poor. Shan`t go there again. Perhaps we got them on a bad night.

A TOP PLACE TO EAT!

As sent to Where's Best regarding the Bad review by BobS
Thanks for your reply, and no we are not the owner, just one of many satisfied customers. I agree the original posting was not rude, however, unless you've eaten at the Plough you wouldn't know how off the mark this posting was. For one thing to be wrong is always possible for everything to be wrong in this restaurant is not. In the spirit of accurate info I thought you should know. Kind regards AG

Without Doubt,The Top Restaurant In The Newmarket Area !!
  10 / 10
I have been frequenting the old plough restaurant at ashley, near newmarket for over 20 years now.It is a firm favourite with the racing crowd, but there is always a good mix of people dining. I have also visted all of the so called "must" eateries,of which i must admit there are some good ones around the area. But none, and i mean none, compare to the plough. The food, the service, the ambience, the cleanliness are second to none and quite frankly it is the standard by which all others in the area should be judged. They have a comprehensive alacarte menu,a specials board that changes daily all accompanied by the the most amazing fresh vegetable selection(thats included in the price of your meal, not charged for seperatly which seems to be the norm nowadays). The sunday lunch is quite extraodinary,on average 14 differnt veg served alongside the usual roast meats.A fabulous wine list that any wine buff would love to get stuck into really just sums up what this place is all about. Its prices a very reasonable considering the quality of the food and wine served, proper linen table cloths and silver service, friendly obliging staff, all this tucked away in a quiet suffolk village just outside of Newmarket,go and pay a visit, you wont be disappointed !!

Save your money and avoid at all costs.

We were expecting a nice country restaurant but what we got was the worst meal I've had in ages. They seem understaffed and the owner doesn't care at all about the patrons, rude does not begin to describe it. The soup was watery, the chicken was undercooked and the whole meal was overpriced.
