would just like to let those customers who supported us from the 1st of feb 2013 until 3rd july 2013 that we are no longer at this business we had a very sucessfull six month but decided to move on thankyou ian and anne barwise

myself and my husband ian took over the business on the 1st of feb 2013 we are local people from cleator moor and have been in this kind of trade for 16 years we would like to welcome you all customers past present and new to the wild duck we have a new menu and can now cater for small functions so if its good home cooked food or just a pint and a crack you are most welcome please give us a try i am sure you wont be dissapointed thankyou anne barwise

Stay away
Overpriced food, insolent waitresses and ignorant landlord.
I should have known from looking at the outside of the pub that they really don't make the effort, but we went in anyway. The pub is decorated to minimal standards - no money wasted on making it cosy or welcoming - not a hanging baske in sight!
Food was overpriced and, when we complained that the steaks were overdone(and £16 each - hardly pub prices) the insolent waitress said "Well, will they do?" We asked her to inform the landlord but he never came over. When we went to pay we complained again and he said "Well, you shouldn't have eaten them." This was the only point we agreed on. We told him we'd complained but he just shrugged his shoulders.
The overall bill came to over £140 as there was a party of us, but he refused to make even a token discount. When I waid we wouldn't come again (bearing in min d my relatives are local), he said "That's fine."
Don't give them your custom. There are some fantastic pubs round here where the owners make the effort. Unfortuanately this isn't one of them.

poor response to poor service

Regular customers here and usually had a good meal with no cause to complain , however tonight the chicken in the tikka and pie from our 2 meals was tough and stringy and the chips were hard and small. When we complained the owner said no one else had commented and that was it. No concession offered and full price was to be paid. I`m afraid its the age old response of vote with your feet! PS portions seemed smaller than normal?

It is now over 9 months since i posted my review about this very average and very expensive pub. I am horrified to note that others have now written and commented on the Landlords apalling attitude. I expect that people will eventually vote with their feet-Word will spread-and yet another management couple will have failed due to a complete and utter lack of common sense and basic hospitality.
I will try and give some words of advice as someone who runs an £8 million turnover facility.If EVER i get a letter of complaint. If EVER the customer is not satisfied i do what i have to do until they go away happy. This could mean anything from 10% off the bill to Free meals next time around. It depends on the customer and the level of mistakes.If they go away happy they are likely to return-Simple.
Mistakes DO happen. Steaks DO get overcooked.The customer understands and is forgiving if they are treated fairly and with respect.
So to my original review. I hope that in the coming months we will see a turnaround....I suspect we will not!

What a huge disappointment. I am not sure if the landlord has changed but this was not the experience that we had expected OR been told about. Mrs Whinner and i arrived for lunch on a Friday afternoon. The barman(who could be the landlord) was not exactly welcoming.He served the drinks and took the order but that is all. A smile would probably have cost money.

My heart sank when i saw the unhappy looking staff who were wearing scruffy blue polo shirts.Was this a gastro pub or had we made a mistake?

The food was expensive with main meals up to £15 but the quality did not reflect the price. Mrs Whinners vegetables were overcooked and the chips looked like the pan needed a good clean. My chips were full of burnt bits of fat.

Plates were slapped down.Nobody asked us during the meal if everything was okay and neither did the landlord which suggests to me that he did not care.

The portions were indeed impressive and if you are the kind of person taken in by quantity rather than quality then you will enjoy the Wild Duck.

Most tables were taken which suggests that there are plenty of people happy with a very large plate of overdone chips.
