I work there..
  9 / 10
I felt the need to respond to the user who has claimed to work there.
I have worked at Downe Hall for about a year and a half now. The horses are perfectly healthy and happy. In fact, several horses have health rings which shows that they are at the height of health. Tess hasn't worked for many years now so that fact isn't true. Kara is used and she isn't dangerous: just high spirited. All the workers care deeply for all the horses. We all make sure that the girths are loosened and bridles taken off at lunch. I can't believe for a minute that you had to do that all yourself! All the stables are mucked out EVERY DAY to a high standard. The volunteers are not the only ones that care: the stables has many livery horses so their owners take care of their stables mostly.
The ponies can be quite lazy in lessons, but what pony isn't sometimes!? The way in which we make them trot and canter is in no way cruel: we DO NOT hurt the horses. The riders are properly taught on how to make their horses go forward and many of the riders listen and repsond well and the horses are not hurt in the slightest way. As for the ones who are a little stick happy, they are given a reminder to use legs first, and then a sharp tap on the shoulder to make them go forward. On no accounts do we beat the horses and the customers do not either! In fact, most of our customers help to look after the horses by grooming them and giving them little treats to say thank you. The more experienced riders in the last lesson help to untack and bed down our horses.
Our horses do canter and most of them like being in the advanced lesson as they have more freedom and have a more exciting lesson! How can you say they don't canter!? As for the fact that the horses are apparently bad-tempered and will kick and buck: that is a downright lie! Dinky is a shetland pony. Shetlands are renowned for being stubborn and a little fiesty. I had a Shetland when I was younger and he was fiesty as well. However, Dinky is a perfectly sound, good little pony and is well-behaved in lessons. Yes, we have had a couple of incidents where some of the horses have bucked, but then again, what riding stables hasn't? The riders were not hurt and the horses did not injure themselves. The horses only rarely buck and if they do, it's only because they got spooked.
You say that all the majesty and power has been bred out them? Have you actually looked at the school horses? They are all beautiful and could be show horses. I admit, they get a bit muddy sometimes when it rains but they are then groomed.
When it rains, the riders can cancel or ride in the rain. When the horses come in, we immediately put a rug over them so they don't catch a chill.
Lastly, I (and my best friend) have worked through the winter at Downe Hall Stables. It snowed heavily when we worked in the winter and the lessons were cancelled. The horses were kept warm and well-fed, and lessons only began again when the schools were safe for the horses. When it was still squishy in the schools, we took the utmost care to mark out tracks in the schools on the drier parts so the horses wouldn't injure themselves or slip.
There are only 4 lessons in the afternoon so that's only 2 hours!
I am shocked that you posted your story. It seems to me as if something offended you so you decided to spread lies. Downe Hall Stables is an excellent riding school. The horses are well-cared for and loved deeply by workers, owners and customers. I look forward to working there and count the days until I can get back there. I work from 7:30am to about 5:15pm. Yes, in the winter it's cold and often frosty but we all soon warm up. We make sure the horses are warm, well-fed and cared for in every possible way. They are in stables that are matched to them, depending on their size, so they have plenty of room. All in all, I don't believe a word of your story. You say they would be screaming for help? No. They would be yelling with happiness, in the knowledge that they're probably the best-looked after horses in the entire world.

Great Riding School
  9 / 10
I have been riding at Downe Hall for about ten years and would thoroughly recommend it.

The staff are helpful and caring and really do look after the horses well. I have rated the school 9 out of 10 (would be 10/10 if there was an indoor arena as well).

The instructors are very good with the younger children, supportive and encouraging. For the more advanced rider you can hack out (which is great fun).

I dont agree with the comments made by the person who said they worked there (sounds like sour grapes to me!). I have spent a long time with the staff and horses. The horses are well looked after and given regular breaks so they are not overworked. The busiest days are Saturday and Sunday and the stables are closed on a Monday so the horses have a full days rest straight after the busier period.

I would recommend this stables to new riders as well as advanced.
