Newcastle wonderful shame about hotel
  1 / 10
I am in the hotel and hospitality career and was looking forward to receiving it rather than giving it out so i Very Recently decided to book here to get away and relax for a bit and was very dissappointed. The Avoca hotel website really gave me good impression of hotel but once got there was very different. The front of hotel looks run down and once entering the hotel the inside looked run down and dark. The carpets in hall ways torn and rough looking. I Had paid more than 50% of the room rate as a depoist and on arrival first thing i asked was to pay the rest of room rate up front before even seeing the room. i didn't even get as much as a hello how are you when i arrived, i really didn't feel welcomed. The staff had no uniform which looked unprofessional. When got to room i when to have shower and could not get any hot water or water pressure, it was a very unrefreshing shower. Later that night i when to Hotel Bar at 8pm and to my suprise it was closed so left hotel to go to bar on street. When arrived back at hotel went to room to watch some tv but was notice in the room saying that if i wanted to watch tv i needed a remote control that could be obtained at reception for a £10 depoist! The Next Morning i got breakfast which was nothing to write home about and was not checked on once after receiving my breakfast to see if everything was ok as if i was would of asked for some tomato sauce as did not have any on table and couldn't find any in dining area.... so when looking for waitess to ask if she could get me some but could not find any hotel staff. I decided to go to get my stuff and just leave couple hours early and when looked out window of my room there was the waitess and chef in back yard smoking and joking as every other resident was left to accommodate themselfs which when you pay to stay there you expect to be accommodate for. I can honestly say i have never received such ill run hotel and hospitality treatment. I have never stayed anywhere i have never enjoyed until now.

Great views and great value
  10 / 10
This was a great place to stay. We had a fantastic view of the bay from our window, with Slieve Donard on one side and the Isle of Man and Scotland ahead. The staff told us that 15 out of 16 rooms have this great view. The hotel is privately owned and they seem to be working their way round it doing it up. The bedroom was newly decorated and very clean as were the dining room and reception. The priority now should be the outside as this looks a bit run down, which is not a good first impression. The breakfast was tasty and fresh. The staff were friendly and the location was close to the action but not too close!
