Great all year round tennis
  1 / 10
It is a good quality club most of the time. Great for tennis and family friendly. The gym is very good and the cleanliness of the club has always been a good standard. The tennis staff are great, very helpful, great fun and during my many years as a member I was always made very welcome, the Racquet Manager in particular (DML) is a star.

The club membership prices are a bit too high in my opinion; the cafe prices in particular are a bit expensive. That said there are some pleasant members at the club and once you get started with the tennis leagues you will always have good people to play with at all levels.

Finally, it's only when you leave the club and go elsewhere that you realise the quality of the tennis courts at David Lloyd, Cardiff. There are 14 courts in all (7 indoor and 7 outdoors). Great for playing tennis all year round and I personally loved the indoor courts.

It's good... and it's bad.
  2 / 10
I've been with David Lloyd for over a year now, and have befriended and spoken to many of the staff and members. The following comments are from my experiences and theirs.

To start with the good points:

- The staff are very friendly
- The gym and sports instructors are excellent
- The classes are top notch
- There is plenty of equipment
- It's a big gym.

On these points, I'd have to give it 8/10 (but refer below to quality of gym equipment).

Bad points:

- David Lloyd is very expensive. At time of writing, it costs £62.50 for basic single membership (gym, sauna, swimming pool, steam room, jacuzzi and some classes) and £110 for basic dual membership. When I first started, it was around £55 for basic single membership.

- New members now have to give 6 months' notice to leave. Previously it was 3 months.

- The "upgraded" gym equipment, which appeared over Christmas 2007, actually feels like a downgrade. Here are the highlights: the seats on the equipment are short and awkward (like bike seats), the weights have no holes and are awkward to pick up, some of the weights don't fit the bar and, most annoyingly, strategically placed safety bars make it impossible to spot someone properly on the bench press.

- The main reception is a joke. The computers break down, appointments and reservations often get lost and forgotten, organisational standards are poor and, as I found, a month can go by before a complaint is answered. I have been told by a member of staff that there is only one person who handles complaints, and she is so inundated with them that it takes a while to process.

- The gym gets very crowded at obvious times (Friday and weekend, straight after work, the "new years' resolution" time of between Jan and Mar)

- The car park is frequently full, and in these cases you have to join a long queue to get out to find a place outside the gates to park. This is particularly the case in the New Year.

- There is no sense of respect for members. David Lloyd appears to exist in order to get as much money from its members as possible, and give as little back as possible. The weight machine in the changing rooms is 50p or £1 for a BMI check, the free gifts promised after visiting the gym X number of times often never appear, the canteen is a little on the expensive side and the gym equipment feels cheap (see above).

So, plenty of good points, but you should expect this from a gym that charges such high fees, so I'd give 5/10 for value for money. This is brought down somewhat by the bad points, hence my total score.

My recommendation is to wait for the JJB gym that's opening soon in Cardiff (David Lloyd are worrying about this, and I think they should indeed be worrying), or go to a gym in Newport.
