Fantastic Restaurant
  10 / 10
I was very surprised to read the review "Overpriced Mediocrity", I visited this Restaurant with my Husband and five year old Daughter last July (2008) and we though the food, service and atmosphere were all fantastic. My Daughter was treated like a princess by the staff - not always the case, it can be quite difficult trying to find a 'nice' (English) Restaurant that doesn't turn it's nose up at small children. The food was outstanding, some of the best fish I've ever eaten and the dessert - rhubarb trifle - delicious, the presentation was outstanding and I would not hesitate to recommend this Restaurant to anyone who appreciates good food, exellent service and value for money.

Follow Up
BTW:

Just wanted to clear up the cost of this meal, don?t want people thinking were that expensive,

Dug this tables bill out of our computer and it breaks down as follows:

- Firstly there was only 3 adults.

They had:

- Pre dinner drinks in the bar

- Starters / Mains* / Desserts

* = Inc. Lobster & Extra Large Plaice (our two most expensive dishes that evening)

- Post dinner liquors / liquor coffee's
- 3.5 bottles of wine

The total bill was £182 ... which gives a spend per head of £60.
(there was also a £45 charge for the glassware stolen)

Estbek Responce
The only table we have had over the last few months which have spent £80 per head were the ones which were charged for the glassware they had taken from us, (such are large spend per-head is quite unusual for us) the meal itself also included Lobster - which in any restaurant is most likely the most expensive dish.

The wine is marked at standard - or - below the average restaurant price.

As for the menu; please take a look at our website menu and decide for yourself if it is uninspired.

We are most sorry that this table did not enjoy their evening, however we did write to them at the guest house they were staying at saying that if they returned our riedel glassware we would refund their card the £45 charge for the glassware taken.

We pride ourselves on the level of service, quality of food, unique wines all served by a highly trained team, who like ourselves are quite surprised and most of all saddened by this review.

We always try our hardest to please, and welcome customer comments, but we like many others still regard theft as theft.

overpriced mediocrity
  1 / 10
four of us ate here and all agreed that this was the most ludicrously priced meal we had all had.At £80 per head you should expect exceptional food and wine. We were served neither although the place was busy so presumably the locals have more money than sense of taste.
My view is avoid at all (considerbale) costs.

Top Class & Totaly Fantastic
  10 / 10
Some friends had been a few years back & would not stop going on about how we would like this place, as I love Whisky?s and my wife loves Armagnac ? something Estbeck have a massive collection of!

The table got booked, for my birthday. We arrived a rather late thinking we would be in trouble we sneaked in only to be met my what seamed like the full team, taking our coats & before we knew it we had two glasses of this special sparkling from Australia (another one of Estbeck?s passions is a massive wine collection ? it may take you all night to read but oh-boy do they have a fantastic Australian selection).

I duly picked there Seafood Pie & Julie picked Steak Medallions with a bubble and squeak basket filled with pan seared mushrooms ? at the table these were to die for, as for the starters King Scallops ? wow, wow, wow! We also had a bottle of Pinot Gris following the house recommendation, which went well but sadly did not last very long.

As for the desserts ? don?t even ask! By the time we got to coffee?s we almost forgot about the purpose of our visit ? anyhow Julie picked a vintage 1966 & I a suitably delicious Islay.

The staff were warm & what seamed like best of friends always helpful & knowledgeable about what they were serving.

Would we recommend, hell yes!
