Quality Fish Restaurant

Not only is the food superb (if you like good plain basic fish and chips, which I do) but this place is very atmospheric for its decor. It's like something from about 1970, but without being remotely self-conscious or deliberately "retro". Service must vary from waitress to waitress, but we had a really charming and friendly girl who I think was Russian.
The food was excellent, although not as oily-greasy as the fish and chips I used to get in newspaper (do they still do that I wonder? I haven't seen it for ages). I like oily-greasy (occasionally), but this was a better quality crisper batter, which I can't complain about. Generous portions too, and it's licensed.
When I say it's like the 60s/70s (and the menu has good old stuff in it too, like prawn cocktail, scampi, and knickerbocker glory even) I mean that as high praise. And I don't just mean it's been untouched for years - the surfaces are newer and cleaner than that. It's obviously been maintained and replaced where necessary keeping to the classic old style. So if the owners read this, please don't change it! Don't fix it if it's not broken...
Altogether a great find - we will be going back and telling other people.

we went here today (bank holiday monday) my husband ordered a large haddock and chips only to be told the only large fish they had left was scampi!! funny i thought scampi was pretty standard in size ;) when i asked if they couldnt make a large portion from 2 smaller ones, the girl went off to ask and came back and said they had just one large cod, so hubby had that and i ordered a pie, we each ordered mushy peas and bread and butter as sides, and scampi as a starter for hubby, the scampi arrived on a saucer, half a shredded lettuce leaf, a slither of tomato a wedge of lemon and 5 miserable looking pieces of scampi at a cost of £3 ouch, whilst he was eating it, a woman ordered 3 large cod and chips to take away and hey presto they had them. when the food arrived his did look nice and fresh but my pie was fresh from the microwave with a soggy top and rock hard bottom, a few chips and the cheapest tasting mushy peas i've ever had the misfortune to have slopping around my plate, so I have to total agree with the lady who somebody had the front to call a philistine, but then again maybe the author of that comment was a friend or relative, trying to defend an over priced grubby establishment, and before somebody decides i must be a philistine too, my parents were the owners of an award winning fish and chip shop, and i have been a chef for the last 28 years. And the cost of all this a pretty unreasonable £22-50

i went in with my 4 year old cousin and they were so sweet to her. they did not mess up any orders. were incredibley quick with service. very cheap too. the food was scruptious.

This restaurant is not only child UNfriendly, it's customer UNfriendly. On entering the almost empty restaurant today my friend and I had to seek the waitresse's assistance (she seemed uninterested in us). My friend ordered chips and tea and I ordered tea. We were told they did not serve just tea so we were going to get take out. Until I asked why not, as the restaurant was almost empty. In response the waitress was rude and when I informed who I assume was the manager/owner he said she was right and pointed out a cafe across the road. They have clearly not heard of the concept customer care or 'the customer is always right'! We decided not to give them our custom!
