Best Italian In North East - ignore the stupid woman below
  10 / 10
Hi,

First of all.... the below user hasnt got a clue and obviously went somewhere else!

My whole family (8) go at least once a month and enjoy their meals every single time. The lasagne for instance is sublime and beats any other italians in the region.

The garlic Cheese bread is delicious and the mountains of potato skins you get you cannot fault.

I usually get the chicken in cheese and leek sauce which is the most tastiest dish i have ever had.

The volume of customers speak for itself, you have to book at least 2 weeks in advance - you cannot just walk in off the street and expect and table which a considerable amount of people try.

The staff are exceptionally polite and friendly (the actually have a conversation with you).

PLEASE DO NOT LISTEN TO BELOW - trust me it is easily the best restaurant in sunderland - in fact, im going to book up now!

Bad food, worse service
  1 / 10
Me and my Fiancee are always looking for new places to try locally so walking along the sea front we saw Gabriels was busy and decided to give it a try. We were shown to our table, less with a smile and more with a look of great, i now have more work to do. There were another 5 or six tables in there and with their 4 waiting staff were certainly not ran of their feet, Our order was taken in good time and starters arrived fairly quickly.

My faincee ordered garlic mushrooms, and I guess he got exactly as described, 5 cooked mushrooms with a clove of crushed garlic in each served on an oven proof silver dish. If presentation is everything it failed miserably. I had prawn cocktail, which was fine.

Our starters were cleared and mains arrived shortly after. I had lasagne, which was bolognaise sauce with a slice of pasta thrown in the middle and grilled (you could see by the burnt edges), with no white sauce or cheese and I had to put a significant amount of seasoning on it to get any flavour whatsoever. My fiancee had chicken in white wine and cream sauce with veg and chips. Portion wise you couldn't complain, but the food was terrible. He found a hair in his flavourless sauce, the carrots and cabbage were cooked so much they had lost their colour and the chips were like greasy mishaped bits of potato. It was terribe.

We then asked for the bill which was brought over eventually and when it came to paying, a waitress with a face like she had been sucking lemons, snatched my fiancees card from the table, and put the transaction through without so much as a word or a smile.

A waste of £33 and my fiancee having not eaten anything went on to McDonalds. Absolute rubbish and a disappointment.

Heart and soul of a good meal
  8 / 10
Any number of restaurants will tell you about their signature dishes or specialisms. Gabrieles won't. This is a simple, unpretentious restaurant where the emphasis is on offering the customer well cooked Italian food (mostly from the pizzeria tradition) at a reasonable price in comfortable surroundings with welcoming staff. This is a place that my wife and I like to take our (teenage) daughters to because we feel that the staff want us to be there and appreciate our custom and that is important to us.
