Oh What A Pity
My partner took me to the above pub for my birthday dinner, "wish we hadn't" . Wednesday 6th June 2012 (quite evening with max 18 patrons while we where there)

We pass by most days going to and from work and we had seen that it was being updated and decided to take a drive out to try it. The decor was fine although the lighting could do with lowering to provide a warmer feel to the colours.

Service: Little to no eye contact from the girl behind the bar which is where you have to order your food and drink. Having ordered garlic mushrooms to start followed by a mixed grill for myself and pate on toast followed by a steak (med rare) for my partner we took our seats.

Table was set and we had to ask on the arrival of our starters for condiments as did the people on the table near by, we got to pepper they got two salt!

The pate and mushrooms where passable however the salad garnish was limp and unattractive.

My main course arrived and presentation wasn't its worst part the chips (home made) where the greasiest I had ever had the misfortune to have, I couldn't eat them. My partners meal arrived 15 minutes later as there had been a mix up in the kitchen, and the stake was tough enough to have made the walk back home, some 12 miles.

I had, had enough and was ready to go but my partner as it was my birthday said no try the desert? We did :-(

Home made apple pie with fresh cream for me, you can't go wrong and a chocolate roulade for my partner.

They arrived together and presentation wasn't bad. The roulade had been nuked far to hot and as a result to hard. The apple pie was nice the apples where perfect the pastry was good, the cream was SOUR and OFF.

Although my partner wouldn't let me say anything about the chips we did let them know about the cream and the landlady who's interaction with ourselves was lacking apologised and never charged us for the desert whisked it off into the kitchen where she her husband and the only other member of staff I assume discussed the issue. I left leaving my partner to pay a bill of £46.05.

Pate £5.25 over priced by £1.50

Mushrooms £4.50 over priced by £1.00

Mixed Grill £12.95 acceptable if the quality and presentation had been right

Rump Steak £12.95

Deserts not priced on the board but charged at £4.50 over priced by £1.00

Couple of pints totalling £5.90

Overall View:

The pub lacks atmosphere and interaction between the management and staff with their customers, they miss by a long way the attention to detail throughout and the lack of attentiveness means that they will struggle to overcome these basic issues. Such a shame as the investment that has been made will not reap the rewards it may otherwise deserve.

Home-made food is goooood
  7 / 10
We discovered the Harrington Arms a couple of months ago just paasing through.
A log fire and a nice pint of Guiness got us off to a good start served by a friendly landlady. A hot beef (local farm) baguette absolutely stuffed with succulent beef slices and onions with a drizzle of gravy really hit the spot. The damson crumble and custard (picked from the orchard on site) was superb.
Run by a family employing no staff and preparing all the food by hand from local farms and shops, you get that feeling you are a guest visiting a family in their own home, complete with friendly cat trying to sneak in for a fuss.
We went back this weekend and had home made cottage pie with rustic veg on the side and a pudd to follow, all washed down with a decent pint, No problems whatsoever. The prices and quality are bob on for pub food Two courses and a drink for £12-£13 a head.
If you want a processed burger, go to a fast food burger drive thru. If you want grand dining, go to a restaurant and pay £35 - £40 a head.
OK, so the "traditional" loos were cold and in need of a refurb but they were clean and had paper towels, soap and loo paper. You have to remember Robinsons Brewery control tenants and investments tightly (check out their Code of Practice on their website) and pubs are closing left right and centre across the country due to lack of customers.and the current economic climate.
All in all, the current tenants are doing a pretty good job and shouldnt be judged by the standards of their predecessors (perhaps why they arent there anymore!!)
We will be going back for sure.
Hope this review helps
