The Star Inn

The star has undergone a refurbishment and is under new management. Hopefully the previous poor experiences will not occur again.

I was dubious about visiting this restaurant again because on the last occasion half the menu was out of stock, nevertheless, as it was many many months late, I decided to give them the benefit of the doubt for another visit, so I took my family (6 of us in total) and had the following experience.

You need to order (and pay for) your meal before you eat, so I ordered our meal and drinks at the bar. I was once again dismayed to find that of the five meals we decided to order, two were out of stock and one item was not available for another meal. When our starter arrived the drinks did not, apparently we should have been given them when we ordered but this was not the case. The starter came with chicken wings which were stone cold when bitten into, so my wife enquired about this, the whole starter was taken away and returned. The wings were hot, but as we were finishing, my wife found the same chicken wing that she had originally bitten into, obviously the chicken had been reheated in a microwave. Our main course arrived and the starter plates were cleared away, one of the children meals had not arrived, so we asked for this to be brought to us and my wife raised the complaint about the chicken wings with the restaurant manager Ms Sue Sullivan who said she would check with the kitchen. I have to say that my main course, a steak and ale pie, was so bad that I couldn't possibly have eaten it, it also came served with chips that were so soggy and stringy they'd have made the worst fast food joint look good. After a few moments Ms Sullivan returned and said that the chef had said that all the chicken was cooked fresh, however, we did not accept this and quite reasonably pointed out that someone was not telling the truth, Ms Sullivan then became quite arrogant and abusive towards my wife and returned to the kitchen. The next thing that happened quite literally took my breath away, the Chef, Mr Gareth Trainer, came out of the kitchen into the restaurant and started shouting at my wife in the middle of a crowded restaurant saying that neither he or his staff were lying. At this point I said that we were leaving. A full refund for the food (not drinks) was given and Ms Sullivan followed us out of the restaurant. We said that we would not dine there again, and we were told that we would not be welcome anyway. Needless to say, I can only recommend to anyone to give this restaurant a wide berth!
