I Don't Usually Do Reviews But .........
I think I sat across from the lady who wrote the above review and she was one of the rudest people I have ever had the misfortune to share a restaurant with. I was there with my family and we couldn't speak higher of the restaurant and service and I think that the temperature being -5 indicates why it wasn't perhaps as busy as it usually is.

It wouldn't have mattered if Gordon Ramsey was cooking her food - it just wouldn't have been good enough - perhaps she had an agenda because we had broadly the same food and it was nothing short of exellent.

The only thing I could agree with in her review was the one slice of toast with the Pate - I too beleive there should be two as a minimum. Andif she didn't get Walnuts on her salad, that is a reasonable complaint.

However, I saw numerous people ordering the Brandy Braised Steak which was exactly as described, the Fishcakes were clearly home made and not something you would buy off the shelf and the Goats Cheese - its not exactly a subtle (I assume thats what she meant) flavour as she suggests - you don't usually order Goats Cheese expecting subtle.

I was incensed by the way she talked to the Waitress and staff when making her complaints which is why I felt strong enough to watch the review sites waiting for this to appear. Shes even put exactly the same review on another site so ask yourself

You should really try this place as I really think that this person had an alternative agenda as no-one else in the restaurant had any complaints and most in close proximity complained about how rude she was when she left.

Don't take my words for it being a fantastic place to eat, but don't take hers for it being as she described - I suggest you give it a try and make your own decision after reading such a poor, one-sided review.

Dissapointing.
We have eaten here several times before and always enjoyed the whole experience. HOWEVER, we ate there last night and it was appalling, it has obviously changed hands again, as it was not a patch on its former self.

The menu was full of seasonal salads? in November? (it was minus 5 degrees outside, definantly not salad weather)

We started with goat cheese salad with walnuts (no walnuts) and far to much raw onion, totally over powered the subtile flavor of the goats cheese and pate with a large salad garnish and only one slice of toast, which was sufficient for one of the two slices of pate given.

Tomato and tarragon soup was nice.

Followed by the mains of,
Fish cake with selection of vegetables, this fish cake was deep fried and was ineadible, carrots over cooked, swede cubes and new potatoes, and off the specials board brandy braised steak. This was described on the board as 'To Die For' it was dry, over cooked, had no flavour and had no brandy in the sauce whatsoever, set on a bed of mash.

We did however have a great bottle of red which we enjoyed.

When we mentioned this to the waitress (who was efficient) we were told it was the chefs first day...Should be his last as well.

It was such a dissapointment, we have loved the food and atmosphere here so many time before, but on a Sat Night to only have 14 people in the whole place speaks volumes, or maybe it was REM coming out of the sound system that was putting people off, definantly not the right backround music for 'fine dining' as much as I like REM....

Avoid this place like the plague, until they get there act together.

Bad bad service lets down all
  1 / 10
After driving past this place many times my partner and I decided to give this place a go. It is warm and cosy and has the potential to be a wonderful place. However the service is appalling and lets it down 100%. Upon arrival I was not even looked at. I smiled at the the three bar staff behind the bar. But got no acknowledgment. They were not serving another customer. I assumed it must all be there first day, and were completely inexperienced to even smile to a customer. Or the place was closing and they didnt want anymore customers? I waited at the bar with not so much as a bit of eye contact, let alone a simple smile or comment "I'll be with you soon'. After 3 minutes of just standing there the waitress looked at me (without saying anything) and so I smiled and asked for a drink and enquired about the menu. I told her were we would like to sit (assuming this was the only area) and ordered two carvery meals. I was not told about how to get my carvey meal - she assumed I would know? You had to go round to another part of the building and hand in your ticket and serve yourself. All of which I dont mind but would have been nice to have this explained would have been nice for her then to suggest if I wanted the carvery to choose a seat nearer. At the end of the meal when I went to pay, again I was left standing at the bar with absolutely no acknowledgment that I was waiting. No smile, no eye contact, nothing. The standard of service is appalling. This costs nothing and truly reflects the bad management of this place. I have now read only bad reviews about this place and would not recommend anybody to dine there. Save your money to a place that deserves and actually wants it. I will NOT be returning and intend on telling all friends and collegues never to visit this place.

No third chance!
  1 / 10
We travel by the Mustard Pot every weekend, due to having family in the area. 5 weeks ago we went in for our Saturday evening meal. We both had the fish & chips. The chips are everything the previous reviewer said, and more. When I enquired as to what they were cooked in, I was told bacon grease. My husband was sick within 2 hours of the meal - we don't know if it was the fish or the chips, but I didn't eat my chips, and he did.

We returned tonight, because I do believe in giving second chances - silly me! I ordered what was described as a steak with a stilton & port jus. I received several pieces of tough gristly meat (not a steak that was sliced, but bits of oddly shaped meat that had been cut before cooking) swimming in a thin jus that had no flavour at all, accompanied by 4 cherry tomatoes. I had ordered my steak as 'medium' but the meat was thoroughly cooked. This was served with new potatoes that had obviously been re-heated. This meal was £17.99. My husband had the steak pie, as described in the previous poster's comments. He didn't eat the 'chips'.

I told the waiter that my meal had been very poor, and he said he would 'let the chef know'. Hardly satisfactory considering the £46 we spent (with starters, drinks, the steak and the pie) on this meal out for 2.

We won't be returning, and we certainly will ensure that our families, friends and colleagues are forewarned about the poor food (and customer service) at the Mustard Pot.

Poor Food, Poor Value
  1 / 10
We arrived at lunch time (midweek) to find only a reduced menu available. Two meals were ordered - Roasted Salmon with Mustard Sauce and a Steak Pie. When asked we both ordered chips because we normally don't eat these and chips are a bit of a treat.

The salmon when served was poached not roasted. The waitress was adamant it was roasted. Now I do know the difference between roasted and poached and this was definitely not roasted. Nevertheless I accepted the dish even though it was served somewhat unexpectedly on a bed of salad. (One might assume that roasted salmon with chips might come with veg, but that's just my expectation).

The steak pie was a "convenience" pie. The steak and the gravy was in an oval dish with a puff pastry lid (cooked separately) dumped on top after heating. Whatever happened to proper steak pie with the pastry cooked with the meat? The steak pie came with nothing else; no veg, no salad.

Lastly the chips when they arrived were anything but chips. I had 7 chips, my partner 9. The chips were more like potato skins, very dark, limp and, frankly beyond what any reasonable food place would be too embarrassed to serve up. They were without doubt the worst chips I've ever had and weren't even good potato skins either.

No apology from the staff. Just a stony face. Will never go there again considering we just spent £24 on two bar meals and two drinks. Value for money: 1/10.
