Disappointing
  1 / 10
A bit pricy for what it is, but my wife likes the place.

So I popped in during my lunchbreak specially to speak to Pete, the owner, about booking a table for a suprise birthday party this September for my wife. I wanted to know whether they could accomodate a special surprise (nothing naughty!) that I wanted lay on, and only the owner could make that decision.

When I asked the barmaid if Pete was available she said yes, but when I didn't want to reveal what it was about, she suddenly said he unavailable. Nothing personal, I wanted to talk to the person in charge - who, within a millisecond - was unavailable.

Fair enough. So I took off. A booking for a table for 12 taken elsewhere.

Still - good riddence eh, Pete? After all, I'm only a customer who wanted to pay you money. Don't worry, I won't be back - and I'll make sure all my friends know the reason why.

Good food at reasonable prices
  8 / 10
We live quite near this pub and often visit for food and drink. We have dined in both the restaurant and the pub. (The food served in either venue is the same). The food is very good. Overall I would recommend this for a good meal at reasonable prices. The staff are always helpful and friendly.

Fantastic food
  10 / 10
I moved into the area recently and was worried about visiting this pub because of the previous reviews.

I have now been 5 times and the food has been outstanding each time. They do a great pie and mash, the steak and ale pie is lovely and last sunday I had a roast dinner. The potatoes were fluffy and crispy, lots of good quality beef and a big home made yorkshire pud and fresh veg. And a cracking sticky toffee pudding. The service is quick and the staff are friendly.

I can't understand how it has got bad reviews. I dine out a lot and I'm pretty fussy but, believe me, this pub is a gem.

Inconsistent food, awful service.
  2 / 10
Just got back from the Royal Oak and was disgruntled enough to right a review. 3 of our 4 roast meals were reasonable, but the 4th was an inedieble lump of rock solid 'pork'. Two of our table ordered this dish, mine arrived on time but couldn't be cut with a knife and the other was moist but arrived ten minutes later than everyone elses meal. I have never returned a meal before but simply couldn't chew this one so politely asked if it could be exchanged for a fresh one. It was returned back to me with a message from the chef saying 'that's the way it comes'. Added to this, they served us the wrong drinks, gave us someone else's bill, never bought the coffee that was ordered and charged us for the meat that was returned (again) to the kitchen. Terrible service and inconsistent food quality - we won't be going back.
