 "Somewhere To Avoid"?
  3 / 10
The review below is based on my personal experience of residing in a room at "Somewhere to stay" between 25 Jul - 31 December 2015. I have never written a Hotel or B&B review before nor particularly wish to again. However, after spending time at "Somewhere to stay" I decided it was important to make those, who find themselves considering taking a room for a night or longer at this establishment, fully aware of what they are letting themselves in for prior to making a booking, as the idyllic appearance of the property and it's surrounds depicted in various promotional pictures coupled with the jovial, pleasant, anything to accommodate impression given by the proprietors, was not the reality of my experience.

On the positive side, the room itself was generally fine, it had a large double bed and although there was no wardrobe space it was en-suite and generally cleaned to a reasonable standard. This was, however, with the exception of the shower which did not seem to appear on the cleaners rota. Also, when moving the bed it appeared as if the previous resident had stored a hair piece under the mattress if the amount of dark hair I found there was anything to go by. There is access to a washing machine, a fridge freezer, oven and a sink and there is also a small dining room with a few cereals and some fruit available. This, however, is where the good news ends.

Firstly, the WIFI connection within the room is appalling. Weak, barely readable for the most part and continually dropping out. That is if it has not been turned off by the landlord to allow him to undertake some job or another around his house, which appears to share the same power socket as the internet hub. When finally connected to the internet the download speed was very poor, with websites, pages, videos etc taking what appeared to be an age to present themselves.

Next, the main A4 is located very close to the property and is a continual source of annoyance from early in the morning until last thing a night and even into the early hours if it is race night for Reading's youth that evening. If you are planning on staying anymore than a night please do not let anyone convince you that the noise isn't an issue, because it was for me and it could be for you.

Although there is ample off-road parking in the driveway area at the front of the house it is rarely fully available due to the myriad of second hand cars, caravans and motor homes that make up the various additional businesses of the guest house owners. If your car doesn't get dinked or scratched by these other forms of transport that congest the driveway it could well get damaged by the proprietors young children who are constantly running or riding their bikes between the motor vehicles that spread themselves in various states of repair around the driveway.

Moreover, the children come into their own first thing in the morning either on week days or more annoyingly during weekends. A cacophony of screaming, shouting and fighting greets the guest house resident most mornings and in the afternoon after school, on weekdays.

Then there are the properties grounds which appear quite appealing in adverts for the B&B. Again, this is not the reality. Be ready for cars, caravans, motor homes, motor boats being parked in various locations around the grounds in various states or on the rundown tennis court that doubles up as a car park. This associated with the various piles of detritus in certain areas of the garden result in a far from appealing vista when coming and going to/from the property.

Finally, there are the owners themselves. When I first arrived at the property and enquired about staying for a minimum of a year, giving clear reasons for my request, I was given robust assurances by the seemingly accommodating female owner that this would not be a problem. These assurances, however, turned out to be of no value as the owners asked me to vacate the room after only 5 months stating that they wanted to redecorated. When I offered to move into alternative accommodation whilst the room was redecorated the female owner changed her reason for requesting my vacation of the room to a desire to have weekend occupancy back. Whilst I realise that plans can change, there was definitely no indication that the room would be redecorated in the near future, the desire for weekend occupancy was never raised and the duplicity displayed of the female owner of the property regarding the changing reason for my vacation from the room left me questioning her integrity and honesty.

In summary, all that is outlined are my experiences of the above property, the
owners children and the owners themselves, make of them what you will but in answer to the question posed in the title of my review "Somewhere to avoid"?..........for me, the answer is most definitely......YES!!
