The Hideaway - Shanklin's best kept secret
  9 / 10
The Hideaway, as its name suggests, is not on Shanklin's High Street, nor the popular beachfront. Instead, you have to walk along the East Cliff path on the way to Sandown to find it.
But find it you must for this is a quirky little restaurant with, without any doubt, the best views of the ocean on the whole of the Isle of Wight.
Until a few years ago, it was an Italian restaurant, but with new owners, it now serves traditional British food - and my goodness - what delicious food it is too. The Chef, Ann, cooks with a mother's touch and attention to detail and the portions are generous and mighty tasty indeed.
Mick, the co-owner, is without doubt, a most eccentric character indeed - with a style entirely his own, so don't expect the usual levels of service you would find in most restaurants. But do expect a really warm, personal welcome and his own brand of quirky humour.
Because the restaurant is situated on a path mostly frequented by dog walkers, well-behaved dogs are welcome and on most days you can expect to be greeted by the resident pet, Laddie, whose gentle nature is one of the first things you will notice. As far as I am aware, The Hideaway is the only dog-friendly restaurant on the island.
Their Sunday roasts are a real treat (Laddie is not permitted into the restaurant on a Sunday) and the portions are enthusiastic to say the least.
Probably not the kind of eating establishment preferred by the ultra-posh, the Hideaway is nonetheless one of the friendliest and most relaxing restaurants in Shanklin, with a view and food to die for.
