Another brilliant return to the Anchor in Sidlesham
  10 / 10
This pub has it all... Great selection of food and wine, a cosy and friendly atmosphere with very welcoming staff. I have eaten here twice now and must say I would recommend it to everyone. I visited last week and had the BEST cod and chips! The cod was fresh and the chips cooked perfectly, it was a very generous portion and came with some peas, side salad and delicious tartare sauce. My husband had the steak which was cooked to perfection and topped with peppercorn sauce. We then couldn't resist having a dessert after seeing the menu - my homemade chocolate brownie was delicious and was finished with a generous helping of cream, my husband had the homemade apple pie from the specials board with custard - again wonderfull! I must say the whole experience was very pleasant, the staff are great, very attentive and friendly and even though it was a busy a Saturday night we were well looked after and not kept waiting long - I look forward to bringing the rest of the family here for our fish and chips next week :)

clean and friendly environment

i came to the anchor with my friends and we all had food off the menu, even though it was sunday lunch and a variety of roasts were available, i chose the fresh cod and chips, and can honestly say it was the best cod and chips i had ever eaten, you can tell the fish is fresh, and the peas were not frozen and the chips were cooked perfectly, my two friends ordered the lambs liver and bacon and especially enjoyed that it was cooked to perfection. the land lady and staff were exceptionally helpful when asking them questions about the menu, they were happy and all looked presentable. i would recommend this pub to anyone who enjoys good home cooking! my only negative is that the tastecard only lets one person dine for free, rather than 50% of final bill, overall a great experience

We probably picked a bad night..
  2 / 10
We fancied the advertised Friday carvery in the 'Tudor Barn'. Unfortunately there was a private party, no carvery, and we had to eat in the general bar. The staff generally looked unhappy, something to do with the party and the pressure on the kitchen. We waited a while for our main course, but not too long. The food was a little disappointing I have to say, okay for a pub, but nothing special. When it came to desert though, we managed to get on the wrong side of a stroppy waitress. Our children had ice cream, which was fine, and when they finished we were ready to go. Unfortunately then some cheese arrived for me, which I assumed had been forgotten about. We politely said it was too late and we were ready to go. We then had to suffer the embarrassment of a different waitress returning to the table with the cheese and pretty much demanding that we ate it. We declined and were treated to a look of pure disdain.. which was continued to the checkout. Needless to say we were not thanked for our £80, but then we declined to give a tip.

Not a place I would recommend, nor a place we will be rushing back to.

Absolute ghastly place - AVOID!
This place is a disaster and needs sorting out. On the first fine Sunday of the summer the place was practically empty. The atmosphere inside is dismal and the whole place needs a thorough refurbishment. Even the staff look bored and fed up.

They do not sell non-alcoholic drinks that are not fizzy so one has to resort to a juice which really is unsatisfactory these days with so many good products like elderflower non-alcolic wine etc on the market. They just appear not to be bothered to appeal to the public.

As regards the food - ths was unspeakable. We ate from the carvery which was limited and very poor. The vegetables were watery and overdone, The roast potatoes were partly burnt and tasted burnt. The gravy was brown and very liquid - other than that there was no indication it was gravy as it had no taste or substance. The yorkshire puddings were hard. The plates were cold and so the food went cold very quickly. The horseradish sauce had been watered down and did not have much taste. The dessert of brownie with ice cream was appalling. The hot [microwaved in my opinion] brownie had been burnt and had cinders attched to the bottom. The ice cream melted and became liquid quickly as the whole lot had been dumped into a pudding bowl - appalling presentation and very thoughtless. The price of £9 for the carvery is appalling in view of the extremely poor standard. If they cannot do a decent carvery they should not attempt one at all.

The place should be sold to someone who can do something with it as the building itself could be nice.
