This review is in response to all the negative comments I have read previously.
Apart for a rather long wait at the unattended restaurant bar the service provided by Diane was cheerful and efficient. The food was well prepared and served. The salad bar was excellent . The choice of beers was very good. We will return.

Never again!
We visited on a thursday lunchtime and firstly had to wait 10minutes to be seated as there was no-one to assist us. We were then placed at a table which was not only dirty but very sticky! I was then told I had to help myself to Pepsi and was given an empty glass to put it in! We then waited a long time for our main meal (one scampy and one chicken breast filled with bacon and cheese). Because of where we were located, we could see the serving hatch area and meals were being left a long time before being served to customers! We could only see 2 waitresses serving and the restaurant was very busy. That evening, my husband developed food poisoning which we think may have been contracted from the chicken he ate! Overall place seemed dirty and disorganised. Would not venture to go there again!!!

Change of management.... so much better
  10 / 10
Went here recently and it has changed alot under the new management. I hear that they also have a new head chef. When we went there the real fire was roaring away in the bar and it was very busy. We had to wait 10 mins for a table but it was worth the wait as the food was good value. The salad cart is great and I would recomend the ribs. They have a refill machine for soft drinks which is a good idea as you can go back again and again. To finish off we had a rocky horror which was huge and again good value.
To sum up, if you've not been there for a while, and heard bad things, then give it another go as it seems to have changed for the better since we last went a year ago.

Don't think twice
  1 / 10
After phoning to reserve a table we were told that this was not possible over the phone but if we came straight away we would stand a good chance in getting a table for two. On arrival ten minutes later we found that there were plenty of tables but was told that we would have to wait thirty minutes for one or more in the same rudeness tone as on the phone. We made a hasty retreat to find more empty tables outside but these were not offered to us. We drove tem minutes down the road towards Christchurch Dorset and came across a Toby Carver, we receive a great receiption on arrival and was offered a table of our choice, this we accepted along with the great atomosphere of the waitered service. We settled down to a carvery, sweet and drinks all for under £20.00 for two (BEFORE 7PM) and enjoyed every moment of the evening, unlike the experience we had received at the Cat and Fiddle.
We cannot recommend the Cat and Fiddle to anyone as there are no excuses for rudeness, so do as we did and experience the receiption as we did and go the the Toby Carvery and don't think twice.

BETTER AFTER RECENT REFURBISHMENT
  7 / 10
We ate here a couple of days ago for an end of term/year meal with the children, choosing to try the 'Early Bird' option.

As there was a large number of us we could not be seated immediately although we were told we could eat in the bar area and still have the 'Early Bird' option.

I have only eaten here once before and on that occassion was not impressed by the tired and non welcoming decor, this has now changed considerably and did make a huge difference to the atmosphere and whole eating/dining experience.

Our food was served in a reasonable time although they did get a bit confused with one order but were quick to rectify the problem without too much of a delay. The staff generally seemed polite and the food was much better than I had experienced on my previous visit, I feel it was very good value for money.

I would certainly return here again and feel much better about a return visit this time.

Overall: Good value for money, friendly staff, clean welcoming environment, reasonable service.
